Ten MinutesThere were ten minutes to go until the end of his shift. Behind the counter Tom shifted from foot to foot, trying to work some life back into his limbs. A lone fly droned lethargically around the display of day-old pasties, too fat and sated to buzz. The wine stain on the register had left Tom’s right hand purple and uncomfortably sticky, whilst the smell of industrial cleaning products and the feel of the flickering strip lights made his skin feel too tight. All of it combined, from the well thumbed lads’ mags to the half-price own brand spirits, left him feeling as though he was suffering the slowest death ever served up to a teenTen Minutes

John nodded, deftly rearranging the tails of his starched lab coat as he sat down on the regulation bed. ‘Yup. That’s you. In the flesh.’ The girl in the photo glared up at Sarah, her attitude scathing the black and white celluloid she’d been printed on. Sarah tried to map that cruel mockery of a smile onto her currently pursed lips.

Ed 2Barely half an hour after crawling back into bed, you lie awake: staring at the maps of the world tacked to your ceiling. The cold morning light creeps from underneath your thick curtains, casting a grey dawn light on the bright primary colours of your walls. Your voluptuous double bed is too big and too cold when the others decide to sleep in their rooms and this morning you lie as still as possible, trying not to disturb any cold pockets of air that might be lurking in wait.Ed 2
As your eyes trace the outline of the African coast, you hear Sarah get up and head downstairs
